Hello everybody Smile

Today was a great match for me - it was a good start. I played really well today and served really well. It was a fast match but it wasn't so easy, because Julia is a great player, and I think she just made a few more mistakes on the important points than I did. And then I had control of the match...

Last night I went out for dinner in the city with my team. It was actually close to the hotel. My brother was with us for a little bit but he had to go to the Real Madrid match! He's here with his wife. He lives in Romania but not in Bucharest like me, he lives in Constanta, where my parents live.

I couldn't go to the Real match because I had my match today Sad But still I'm enjoying every moment here, it's my favorite tournament and it's very special for me, like I've been saying all week Smile And the food here is great - but you have to watch what you eat because you can really put on the kilos...!

Right now I'm waiting for the on-court ceremony to remember Elena Baltacha. I found out this morning at breakfast. My coach told me and I could not eat anymore. It was a very tough moment for me - my aunt passed away recently, she had breast cancer then liver also, so this was a painful moment for me, and it is still a painful moment for me. But we have to accept everything and just stay strong...

After the ceremony I'll go back to the hotel. But first let me see some of the questions you sent me Smile

Simona

If you could be any animal on the court, which animal would you be and why? Gavin, UK
"I'd be the rabbit, because he's very fast, and I like it!"

Other than Bucharest, what is your favorite city in Romania? Riki
"Constanta, of course! I was born there and lived there for about 14 years, so that's the one."

What is your favorite place to go on vacation? Evan, USA
"Good question. I went to Antalya in Turkey for my first vacation, and this year I'll go again, but I think also here in Madrid is nice to visit, and Rome too. I like both of these cities too."

Are you a dog person or a cat person? Alex, Greece/Belgium
"Dogs. Dogs. Cats, no."

Will you get Twitter? Steve
"I think I will soon, but I still don't have one. I want to speak with my fans and be more popular!"

Hello again everyone Smile

My match against Lara Arruabarrena this morning was a tough one. I had played her once before on hardcourts and won a little bit easier, but here she was playing amazing. And the court was slower today - Arantxa Sánchez-Vicario court is drier and faster, but Manolo Santana court was a little bit slower - but you always have to adapt quickly because that's just the situation you're given.

But Lara played very well. She's a good player on clay because she has Spanish style - the forehand with a lot of topspin. But I just wanted to stay focused for every point and fight for every point, and that's what I did really well in the end. I was very happy I won in two sets and didn't go to three!

Another thing I was really happy with was my serve. I had nine aces today - I was surprised too! I served well in the first round too, but today was even better, especially in the important moments. It was the best thing for me in the match, I think. I've been working hard on my serve for a while now and I think it's really improving a lot. Right now, it's probably the most important shot for me...

There were some important people in the crowd today, too. Virginia Ruzici was there - actually she always comes to see me because she's my manager! But Mr. Tiriac was also there, and when he comes I'm very afraid!! I think that's why I didn't start so quickly today. But it's important seeing him watching me. I've learned so much from him and he always helps me. I have a lot of respect for him.

I'm just happy I could stay focused on my tennis and win the match today Smile

Oh and how could I forget, my day off yesterday... it wasn't a full day off, I did practice once during the day, but I did a lot of relaxing back at the hotel, and I also went shopping for a bit...

I bought two pairs of high heel shoes Smile

Now I'll probably go eat, then go relax at the hotel, maybe another practice session in the evening... I'm playing the winner of a night match today so I think tomorrow I'll be playing in the evening.

To me it doesn't matter who I play in the next match because both players are tough. Sabine is a great player, but it might be even more difficult to play against Begu because she's a Romanian girl. If it's her we just have to enjoy it - we'll both be playing for Romania and one will be in the quarterfinals.

I just have to stay focused, try to play my best and stay aggressive.

I like this tournament a lot. It feels like home here. The people, the food, the city - everything is just really nice here. I hope to keep enjoying myself and I'm happy you're all reading along with me!

Have a good night Smile

Hello everyone Smile

It was a tough match tonight. Sabine played really well. She was hitting a lot of drop shots, so I had to run a lot! In the second set I told myself I had nothing to lose, and that I just had to win a few points in a row and it would be better, so I just fought for every point and it did get better towards the end...

One of the turning points, I think, was when I broke her in the second set - she was serving really well tonight, so that gave me a lot of confidence in myself. I played much more relaxed after that.

It's always very difficult for me to play at night, but that's tennis, that's the schedule, and I have to adapt. I spent most of the day at the hotel, and then I came here at about 3:30. I ate something and then warmed up, and then the match. I don't like waiting that long to play, but I'm happy I won!

I saw so many Romanian flags in the crowd tonight, and it's just amazing how much they come out to support me. I want to thank them. They support me every tournament. There were a lot of Spanish people supporting me today too, which was also amazing - I feel really good here in Madrid.

Well, it's pretty late and I'm playing again in the afternoon, so I should probably keep it a little short tonight... but I really wanted to see some more of your questions so here I go Smile

Simona

What is your pre-match routine an hour before a match? Gavin, UK
Well there is one thing, I always try to put my hair back - but it never stays in place very well!

What are the best exercises for building fitness off the court? Hugh
I like warming up with the medicine ball, doing both backhand and forehand sides.

If you played your dream Grand Slam final against anyone, who and where? Ricardo, USA
It would be the French Open, for sure. I think right now I'm more confident on hardcourts, I play better there, but French Open. I think playing anyone would be good - just playing the final is good!

Beeindruckend natürlich vor allem dieses "like". Irgendwie ist es auch ein wenig beängstigend, wie hart diese Frau gegen sich selber ist und kein Opfer ist ihr schwer genug. Aber so kommt man halt in die Top 10.

It was another good day today Smile

I have to say, the Romanian crowd was amazing today. They come to support me every time I play and I'm so happy they do. It's really nice to play with this support - I appreciate it a lot !

I expected a tough match because Ana is a great player, and it was a tough match. But thankfully I was playing really well. I played aggressive tennis today and I'm happy I was able to win in two sets.

It was a little bit of revenge, too. We played in Fed Cup a few weeks ago, but beforehand I hurt my ankle and couldn't practice for six or seven days, and when we played I had also played a match earlier that day because of the rain, against Jovanovski. Plus, Ana played really well that day. She beat me.

But I won this time and I'm just really looking forward to being in the semifinals here.

After this I'll talk with my coach a little bit, and then I'll go and eat something - I didn't eat before the match because I had some emotions Smile Then I'll go to the hotel, have a short massage to recover, then I'll go into the city with my team and all of my friends that are here and have a nice dinner.

I would go shopping again but I haven't had time since the last time... and my coach told me there's no time for shopping now... I was very mad! But he's right. I can wait until after the tournament Smile

One thing people usually talk about in the blogs is what they do to pass the time - reading, movies, music - for me it's hard to read in bed, because then I'll probably end up falling asleep!

I mainly just listen to music when I have the time - mostly Romanian songs.

One other thing I wanted to say is I hope my English has been improving! It's not my best language but I'm trying to speak well. I've done a lot of interviews over the last year and it's becoming part of my life now. I think Romanian people can see I'm getting more relaxed with all of the interviews Smile

And of course, I have to talk about playing Petra tomorrow. She's playing well and she might have an advantage because she didn't have to play today. But I have a chance tomorrow and I'll fight for it as hard as I can. She's tough and very aggressive - I have to do my job really well tomorrow...

I look forward to trying to reach the semifinals if I can.

Now for a few more of your questions...

Have a nice day Smile

Simona

Will you be playing the new WTA tournament in Bucharest this summer? Jake
Yes I will be playing there for sure - I really want to play there!

Who are your best friends on tour? Boti, Romania
My best friend is actually back in Romania, but I try to be friendly with everyone on the tour too.

How do you cheer yourself up after losing a match? Adonis, Philippines
If it's a tough match I cry a little bit Smile If not, I just take the positive things. Sometimes I eat a little bit of chocolate, maybe do some shopping... but most of all I look forward to the next match.

BRAIN GAME: HALEP VS KVITOVA (kommentar von craig o'shannessy auf der WTA-homepage)

How you handle adversity is almost always more important than the problem itself.

Simona Halep missed a backhand return to fall behind a set and 1-3 against Petra Kvitova in their Mutua Madrid Open semifinal and the end of the match was rushing hard at her.

But instead of panicking, the 22-year old from Romania regrouped. Instead of speeding things up she slowed things down. Even though the score didn't dictate going to her bench she calmly walked over and took off her red visor and replaced it with a head band. New feel, new look - new player.

In the next game Kvitova missed three backhand returns and Halep surged to win 16 of 18 points to ultimately run away with a 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-2 victory to move through to Saturday's final against Maria Sharapova.

Sometimes all you need is a little change and a little time.

The maturity in Halep's game is evident during and between the points as she is refining a game style where she doesn't beat herself and maximizes the percentages of the sport that really matter for mega-success.

Kvitova possessed far more firepower than Halep in the match but victory in a tennis match is far more defined by who makes fewer errors - not who hits more winners.

The enduring strength of Halep's game is how solid she is at the back of the court and how smart she is when she finally decides to pull the trigger. Halep only committed 24 unforced errors for the match while Kvitova was almost triple that amount with 66. Halep has a mature head on her young shoulders and has an excellent feel for the subtleties of strategy such as when to let the opponent press and make the error rather than trying to end the point herself.

Even though Kvitova hit many more winners (37 to 22), getting one more ball back in play and absorbing the power from her hard-hitting opponent was the order of the day.

Halep is indeed the total package as she also possesses a strong serving game to compliment her clever baseline play. Halep served eight aces and only two double faults for the match and only faced two break points in the last two sets. Halep made 61% of first serves, winning 75% of them and an extremely high 57% on second serves. In the deciding set Halep won an astounding nine of 10 points on her second serve and only dropped three points for the entire set on serve. Halep leads the tournament in aces with 24 from five matches and has only committed seven double faults for the tournament.

She is so good during the point but may be even better between the points with how her mental toughness and refusal to buckle under pressure. In her post match interview she gave some insight into how she approaches the game. "It is an amazing week for me. Today was a very tough match, she played really well but I was fighting every ball and I want to thank everybody because they supported me a lot and also my team and I am really happy tomorrow I play my first Madrid final,"she said.

Halep gets it. She knows she is part of a bigger picture, she knows how to grasp victory from defeat and she knows how important it is to thank those around her who made her meteoric rise possible.

Hello again everyone! I hope you are all doing well Smile

It was a very, very tough match with Petra today. She played really well. When she had a set and 3-1 I took my hat off - it was disturbing me a little bit - and I actually started playing better! I also changed my tactics in the second set. I wanted to play higher and open the angles more, because if you give her balls around stomach height she plays very well from there, very powerful, and very strong.

It was very hot today, and I had a headache during the third set. I needed ice on every changeover. My energy was down, too. But I was fighting for every point - I knew how to manage the conditions, I knew I just had to keep fighting for every point, and I'm so happy I was able to come back and win.

I think the best thing for me today was how I was fighting, and that I didn't stop fighting...

For me this is a very special event. I will never forget this tournament, because here is where I started to play very well last year. And now I have a chance to win the title, but we'll see what happens...

But if someone told me a year ago I would be No.5 now, and maybe even No.4 soon, I wouldn't have believed them. I wouldn't believe I would be this high after just one year. I feel great - Top 5 is really impressive for my country, because it's such a small country, and there's nothing more to say.

Right now, though, I'm really just focused on tomorrow's final. I'm very excited that I can play my biggest final. And Maria's playing so well - I just have to enjoy it and we'll see how it goes!

But first, I might do a bit more shopping today - I'm tired, but there's always time for that Smile

Now it's time for a few more of your questions!

You've said you're more relaxed on court now - how did you become more relaxed? Sue, USA
It hasn't been easy for me to become more relaxed on the court, because I'm a very energetic person, but I just try to stay cool and play very relaxed because my tennis goes better if I'm relaxed.

Today I wasn't so relaxed in the first set, but after that I knew it would be better to calm down!

What famous person would you like to meet and why? Stefan
Hmmm... well, I would love to meet Gerard Butler once in this life. I really like how he looks Smile

Because the final is pretty late tomorrow and I will have to get ready to leave for Rome, this will be my last blog from Madrid Sad But it has been a lot of fun writing to all of you, and I really want to thank all of you for reading this week. I hope you enjoyed it too. And I will do it again soon!!

I will do my best tomorrow, and talk to you all soon Smile

Was haltet ihr von der Wilander-Formulierung sie wäre so eine Art "weiblicher Djokovic"?
